August 21/23 14:36 pm - Riley Pickrell Wins Stage of Tour de l'Avenir

Posted by Editoress on 08/21/23

Canada's Riley Pickrell (Team Canada) has just taken one of the biggest Under-23 men's victories in Canadian cycling history, winning Stage 2 of the prestigious Tour de l'Avenir. The previous best was a second place stage result by Steve Rover in 1996, when Rover finished fourth overall.

An early breakaway by Stage 1 [and overall race leader) Andres Foldager (Denmark) was brought back on this longest stage of the race [195 kilometres], setting things up for a sprint finish. It looked like Radoslaw Fratczak (Poland) had the win, but he sat up too early to celebrate, and Pickrell squeaked by him with a bike throw.

"It's surreal. I'm over the moon. This is the pinnacle of my career," said Pickrell. He also gave kudos to his Israel Premier Tech Academy team mates, who were riding for Israel and finished third and fourth - "Team Israel was doing a really strong lead-out, and I was doing my best to feed off of them. It was a close battle between me and Rotem Tene and Oded Kogut in the sprint, and I managed to come out on top. It's for sure my best result!"

Pickrell has moved from eighth to fifth in the overall standings and from eighth to second in the Points standings.
